Mirror Cities

Mirror cities exist within the Wash in the same physical space as a city in Earth Air. The inhabitants of the mirror cities are universally aware of their Earth Air sister cities, but those Earth Air cities generally have no idea that the space in which their city exists is occupied--albeit in another dimension--by another city.

Mirror cities are much smaller than their sister cities. They have fewer people, fewer resources, and live as all people do within the Wash, without benefit of modern conveniences.

Gunna Anmar

The name of the ancient human city which was located near the modern-day magnetic North Pole. It was destroyed by dragons over one-hundred thousand years ago. An ivory tower stood for centuries after the city's collapse and continued to be called Gunna Anmar, spared because of its height and usefulness as a dragon's perch.

Gunna Anmar, the ivory tower (not to be mistaken for the theoretical concept of higher learning, although symbolically similar), stood two hundred feet tall and rose sheer-sided and domed, like a bullet from the grassy hill on which it was built. It's walls carried the patina of aged ivory, and at the peak there was an observation platform from which sacrifices were carried out to the gods of the people who lived there.

The Dragon King

There can be only one Dragon King. The king is usually a male wasp, and his rule lasts until he is killed. Dragon Kings have been known to rule for thousands of years. Once the Dragon King is killed, the next most powerful dragon (or whichever dragon happens to be nearby when the coup occurs) eats the deceased king's heart. Through this method, all the power of all the past kings passes on to the new king. The effects of this are tremendous: the new king spontaneously grows to gargantuan size, dwarfing all other dragons. It is for this reason that Dragon Kings last so long as rulers. Their strength and power multiplies exponentially, and they inherit the combined knowledge of all kings before them, effectively making them an Elder of the Universe, one of the many titles Dragon Kings use. They are also known as Devourer of Worlds. Each Dragon King is progressively more powerful than the previous one.

The Wash

Scientifically, the magical properties of Slate cannot be proven. There are more than a few scientific minds in the Order of Pallium, and they almost unanimously agree that there must be an unknown element at work within the stirring, roiling lava core of the moon. This element, interacting with other known elements, must be what causes the phenomenon of magic, on Slate as well as on Earth. Of course this is merely speculation, magic itself being at this point scientifically unexplainable, it could merely be a phenomenon of the universe which will ever be inexplicable, much the same as why a man bitten by a wolf might change into a werewolf under the light of the full moon, or why a dead body might spontaneously reanimate into the form of a zombie.

When Slate was banished by Esca Moor, magic on Earth all but ceased to exist for uncounted millennia. The Moor himself, aged well beyond the natural limits of mankind by his own magics, quickly died soon after the moon was gone. Then, in an incredible feat of ingenuity, the dragons on Slate opened a doorway between Slate and Earth. The doorway exists within the icy confines of the Cave of Dreams, one of the many factors which lead us to believe that this is the actual physical location of the moon, though it is believed that it resides in another reality altogether—physically, it is there—inexplicable yes, although that seems to be the case—it is there, and yet it is not. This is somewhat explained in this way, by Dr. Ikor Mdavl:

“If it was truly there, physically there, then it would be shrunken to the size of a grapefruit. But it is not. We have it on very good authority that Slate is in fact still full-sized as are all its inhabitants. Spatially, it exists in the same location as Earth, but its existence is shifted physically to a shared, nearby realm.”

Once the doorway was opened, a mob of frenzied dragons rushed through, and this action brought about a number of consequences. First, it resulted in the almost-immediate demise of every wasp dragon that came through, because wasps are cold blooded, and cannot survive in arctic temperatures. Only two moth dragons came through that day: one named Hillock, and another named Blair, and these were the only two to survive the cold. Secondly, the opening of the portal allowed a rush of energy from Slate to enter Earth’s atmosphere. This energy flows like a series of rivers, from the outlet of the doorway, and then basically southward (there is a short distance where the Wash flows northward, up to the pole, but from that point everything is south), across the entire planet, where it collects again and leaves the planet somewhere over Antarctica, to disperse into the heavens. The Wash flows, as stated, like a series of rivers, spreading out and converging, touching the Earth in some places, widening into lakes and pools, but always flowing. A trained eye can see the Wash visibly, and indeed it appears like flowing water, but tinted crimson.

Though the Wash covers the globe through its vein-like pattern, it is not something that can ordinarily be happened into. One can walk into and out of the Wash with no effect at all, adverse or otherwise, and the person never having known anything was amiss. As stated, it flows. To enter the Wash, one must do so by way of the many doorways into and out of its depths. Sometimes referred to as exits on the inside, The doorways that serve the Wash appear—again, to the trained eye—as a heat shimmer, or glimmer, in an area where the Wash flows across the surface of the planet. Sometimes the doorways move and disappear. It is entirely possible to enter into a pool of Wash energy and become stuck there forever. If a person were to try to walk out of the Wash without utilizing a doorway, or exit, the experience is disturbing to say the least, and can result in death. Accept this account from Gerald Flinter, a one-time newspaperman from Atlanta who discovered the Wash and on whose accounts the Pallium based much of its knowledge concerning the Wash for many years:

“Once I tried to exit the Wash without using a portlet, just to see what would happen. I walked toward the barrier, like a wall of scarlet water before me, and the closer I got there came a buzzing in my ears, which magnified with every step I took. I walked slowly, trying to really measure its effects, and the buzzing soon wasn’t only in my ears but in my head as well. It felt like my brain was vibrating on the back of a honey bee in flight. I also noted an odd coppery taste in my mouth, and that the saliva in my mouth began to sting me; my eyes began to sting, my ears, already numb from the buzzing noise, began to hurt very badly as the noise intensified over and over as I can closer to the border. Finally I grew so faint I thought I would fall over and then all I really wanted to do was sit down and go to sleep. The buzzing sort of hypnotizes you, makes you think everything is okay, and saps your energy dry. It was only with the greatest effort that I willed my legs to turn and walk the other way. When I finally came far enough away for the buzzing to stop I collapsed, and only then did I realize that I’d been bleeding from my ears and eyes and nose. I fell immediately asleep and lay there like a dead man for I don’t know how long. When I awoke I cleaned off the blood and found there were no other adverse affects.”

Since Gerald’s experiment, numerous corpses found within the Wash have given us more understanding of what happens when one tries to exit without using a doorway. Basically, the mind is lulled to sleep, and then the body mummifies. It dries out, the eyes disappear, and the skin turns brown and leathery for people with pale skin, and dark-skinned people’s flesh turns black.

Slate

Slate is a moon that once orbited Earth but disappeared around 100,000 years ago. It is not known what early humans called it, but it is assumed the name would translate into "black moon" today, since the moon appeared black in the daytime skies. In some ancient hieroglyphics and cave drawings, scenes depicting a sky with two satellites have been discovered--one white (Luna) and one black (Slate).

Slate is an uninhabitable rock with a lava core and an atmosphere of very high temperatures. What little atmosphere there is is composed mostly of methane and nitrogen. There is no biological diversity on Slate. It has a rugged terrain composed primarily of slate rock, ash and dust. A sample of the dust on Slate brought to Earth would smell sulphuric, like gun powder. The skies on Slate burn red from horizon to horizon and are cloudless, although hazy.

When in orbit, Slate’s distance from Earth was nearly half that of Luna, and its circumference is roughly half Luna's. Due to its orbital pattern, only one side of Slate faced Earth. It loomed large in Earth's skies--in appearance it was larger than Luna due to its proximity. By day Slate appeared as a black hole in Earth’s sky, featureless and without even texture. By night it was appeared as little more than a large void where stars should be.

Effects on Earth of Dual Moons
Earth and Luna are sometimes called “Twin Planets,” but Slate was merely a moon. Still, its existence ravaged the surface of Earth. The separation of Pangaea, once thought to have occurred over a span of billions of years, might have only taken a million, with two moons’ gravitational pulls tugging at the Earth’s crust.

The surface of Earth was nothing if not tumultuous in those days: storms of the like we have never seen raged across every degree, every hemisphere. Gigantic tsunamis raged every coast, miles inland, making virtually all coastal areas uninhabitable. The Earth would have rumbled with earthquakes almost constantly, and the grinding of the tectonic plates would have reshaped the Earth's surface almost much more rapidly than anything modern humans are accustomed to. Volcanoes would have erupted frequently, and there would have been a many times more volcanoes then as now. And all of this due to the proximity and power of the tiny black moon.

Magical Properties
Sensibly, no life could exist on Slate, because the building blocks of life do not exist there. But in actuality there is life on Slate, a race of prehistoric creatures which in all practicality appear to be the mythological beasts known as dragons. They are perhaps the very source of the Earthly mythology that concerns them. They are large, ranging from roughly the size of a large mammal and up to the size of some of the larger carnivorous dinosaurs. Most are winged and, impossibly, have the power of flight.

Slate is a battery of sorts, a power cell, in which resides a charge of energy that doesn’t exist naturally on Earth. When in orbit, some of this energy was shared with Earth, and it was through this energy—which is what makes the Wash possible today—that magic was enabled. The dragons’ power of flight is dependent upon this energy, as is their unnatural intelligence and many other seemingly impossible attributes.

It is understood that the dragons of Slate commonly communicate with humans on Earth using telepathy, often in the form of dreams, and utilize those connections to enable nefarious deeds and actions. There is an account of one such person, who, in a dream-like state, spoke at length of dragons and Slate, things this person of no consequence could not possibly have known about. This person told the story of Abit, a young human from time immemorial, who witnessed first-hand the vanquishing of Slate and the demise of dragons on Earth. It should also be noted that this person spoke at times during this interview with an unknown dialect which is speculated to have been that of early humans, a language now lost for a hundred thousand years or more.

From Abit’s account, we understand that there was once a great wizard named Esca the Moor, and that using a spell of unknown origin, this wizard performed what might be the greatest feat in human history: he made an entire moon disappear from existence. Slate vanished without a trace and with no remaining proof of its one-time existence. The skies of Slate, once dominated by the face of Earth, now were only black, seen through a dull crimson smoky haze, with no stars or heavenly objects at all visible. As much as the sight of Earth in the sky disgusted the dragons, its disappearance caused even outrage.

Abit’s account answers many unknowns about the process the Moor used, and also relates the dramatic occurrence itself, in which the moon was drawn inexorably toward the Earth, growing larger and larger in the sky, until he thought that it would collide with Earth and destroy all life. But as great arcs of lightning shot between the two and a deafening (Abit was deaf for the rest of his life after this event), thunderous booming sounded all around them, and the air around him crackled with visible energy which lifted him off the ground, the black moon vanished. Abit would go on to proclaim his belief that, in appearance, the black moon had been drawn into the Earth.

It is believed by the Pallium that that is exactly what happened, that Slate was drawn down and into Earth. We speculate as to Slate’s exact location often, and the majority opinion is that, though in Abit’s account there he lived in a tropical jungle-like area, in present day the location of the event must be at the mouth of the Cave of Dreams, which now resides far to the north near the magnetic North Pole itself. It is entirely possible, with the many millennia which has passed, that the pole has drifted so far as to allow for this. Especially considering the cataclysmic event of that day one hundred thousand years ago, when a moon was wiped from existence.

For humans, the effect of removing Slate was cataclysmic. There were some who had refined their powers so that they lived for many, many years longer than natural life can possibly endure, and these people died rather rapidly once Slate was gone. People had to re-learn how to live. They had to learn to make fire with friction rather than incantations. And the average life span of a human dropped to around forty years.

But there were benefits. Humans began hunting out in the open. They cooked their food rather than eating it raw. They enjoyed sunshine. They no longer had to run exclusively at night and under cover of a canopy of trees. Life, though much shorter, was all the more enjoyable.

For the dragons on Earth, nothing could have been worse than the banishment of Slate. Without magic, dragons no longer could fly or communicate. They could no longer breathe fire. They became little more than dinosaurs themselves, great lizards ripe for killing, for the heart of the dragon—that powerful receptacle of magical energies—could no longer receive its portion of magic. Humans hunted them out and killed them all, crushing to powder what could not be burned, destroying every fragment of their physical existence. Thus, there are no remnants of dragons for science to examine, save those who retreated into the depths of the Earth to escape the vengeful humans, and those dragons may never be found.

The Passageway
Slate’s orbit was slightly elliptical. It never ranged out as far as Luna, but on occasion, at (estimated) 100-year intervals, Slate did pass directly over the Earth’s magnetic North Pole (which, as noted, may not have been in the same place then as it is now). On that occasion, the energies of Slate (the Wash) and the magical energies of the Aurora Borealis intermingled, forming a sort of magical passageway between Earth and Slate. It was through this passageway that dragons traveled to Earth, usually only dragons of the wasp mentality, but occasionally moths as well (moths being better suited for colder climes could rule their own domains with little interference from the vastly more-powerful wasps).

It has been estimated that at one time on Earth there were as many as five thousand dragons. The accumulated power with such a number of singularly powerful beasts would have been, in a word, awesome.

Magic

Magic was once widely used and accepted on Earth. But this was before Esca Moor performed the coup which effectively removed Slate from Earth orbit. The black moon generated magical energies which radiated out and encompassed Earth within its envelope. The air on Earth is said to have crackled with an energy unknown to science. Magic for humans wasn’t only learned through patient discipline as it is today, it was inherent, sometimes accidental. Refined, it was awesome. This was what made Esca Moor’s feat possible. But Slate was the generator of the energy, and when Slate was gone, so was magic.

When the dragons on Slate discovered a way to open a portal--that is, when they ripped open the time-space continuum--between Slate and Earth, those mystical energies once again flowed across the surface of the planet, once again enabling magic. But those energies do not fully envelope the world as they did when Slate was in its natural orbit, instead they flow, from the north out of the cave of dreams, the location of the Rift, and very near the magnetic north pole, southward, where they disipate into space. These shafts of energy flow like rivers, pouring across the surface of the Earth, creating pockets of reality which are separate from Earth's natural geography. It is within these pockets which form the Wash that magic has the most potential. The farther away from the Wash, the weaker those energies become.

However, though magic is possible on a limited scale outside of the Wash, the supernatural becomes possible inside the Wash in a way that it can't in Earth air, except in certain circumstances (see note below). For instance, if a human is bitten by a wolf in the Wash, that human might transform into a werewolf. There have been accounts of ghosts roaming cemeteries, will-o-the-wisps floating through the air marshlands, bogs and swamps, and harpies have been said to gather in covens in treetops to scream their nightmarish cries.

Note: There have been occasions when werewolves, ghosts, harpies, vampires and other magical creatures have escaped the Wash or found an exit back into Earth air. When this occurs, often the creature will lose its magical powers, but sometimes, when conditions are right, it will retain them, though on a limited scale. For instance, the moon, especially when full, is known to augment the energies of the Wash. It is for this reason that werewolves in Earth air are known to transform only during the full moon. The Auroras which occur at Earth's poles have much the same effect on magic.

The History of the World
Esca the Moor banished Slate sometime in our prehistory, approximately 200,000 years ago, shortly after the last dinosaurs were killed. This period is considered by science as the dawn of mankind, that point where we as a human animal came to exist in much the same evolutionary state that we live in today. But the scientific facts are skewed by forces science cannot account for.

Dinosaurs reigned, and man lived with them, and you who read this are a skeptic, I know. But you should know that the Pallium is a much older set than you realize. It is older than the Catholic Church, older than anything that exists today other than the Pallium. The history of man began not hundreds of thousands of years ago, but millions and millions of years ago. Civilizations have risen and fallen that have never been heard of and never will be, all before it was thought possible for a man to walk upright and carry a stick.

Dinosaurs, too, thrived over a much longer span of time than is currently believed, and though they are thought of as mythical creatures, so, too, did dragons live, and when they did, they ruled Earth as nothing else ever has. During this period of Earth’s history many creatures existed which are now unknown to science and are considered creatures of myth and fantasy. Creatures of magic, imbued with magic and with magical abilities. Monstrous snakes, leviathans of the deep, creatures that in fact could perform many of the fantastic feats that today are only thought of as fantasy: turning other animals to stone with a stare, growing to megalithic size, breathing fire.

Science will teach you that a giant meteor crashed into the Earth and, as a result of the dust cloud that rose and suffocated the sun, the dinosaurs perished. But in fact, the dinosaurs were killed out of existence. Murdered, as it were, by dragons. Dinosaurs were considered a game animal by dragons, and with voracious appetites the dragons ravaged them, as they ravaged the planet. And when the dragons were all dead and gone and new game needed to be found the dragons began hunting humans.

As game goes the human animal is meager competition, especially when the hunter is a dragon. But humans are thinkers, and were much better equipped to hide, to remain hidden, and, should the need arise, to devise a plan for survival, even if that included battle. Dragons had never encountered a species which could defend itself with tools and weapons, and which could devise schemes and armaments and defenses to keep the dragons at bay. It was a species also that could command the forces of magic, as dragons always had, and in this, humans, along with the dragons, were unique. So, rather than a game of brawn and ferocity, the humans tested the dragons’ mental prowess. Hunting humans became like a puzzle for them, to work out their patterns, their movements, the way they think. The dragons held competitions to see which of them could kill the most humans in a single attack. Humans responded by fortifying themselves in defensible shelters using magic and weapons which grew more and more complex as the worldwide siege endured. But dragons ultimately had the upper hand, the power of flight and fire and raw strength gave them too much of an advantage against the humans, and the numbers of humans dwindled.

At the point when Esca Moor banished Slate, Earth was a tumultuous place due to the gravitational draw of two moons. The surface of the planet was much more active then—volcanoes, earthquakes, tempests, tsunamis, etc. For this reason we can surmise that, though science has figured out a lot of how the planet has shifted and what it once looked like, they really have no concept of the time involved. The changes which caused the continents, which were once joined together in one super landmass we refer to now as Pangaea, to drift apart once was thought to have occurred over the course of millions, perhaps even billions of years. Of course, science doesn’t acknowledge the existence of the once and other moon, so they have no idea how much more quickly the plates shifted. With Slate and Luna both in orbit, the planet’s landmasses were ripped apart.

With Slate gone Earth’s temperamental environment calmed down significantly and came to resemble something more like what we know today. Continental drift still occurs, as do earthquakes, storms, volcanoes and all other manner of environmental calamity, but the level of scale is dynamically diminished. Suddenly, the sun began to shine and the wind, which had always been at gale strength even on a calm day, settled. The Earth’s rumble slowed and finally became virtually unnoticeable. Mountains stopped spewing ash and fire. The coasts of the continents became habitable places, and people could actually go down to the sea without fear of being wiped out. Higher ground no longer was vital to existence, because the tsunamis withered and the flash floods which struck on all corners of the globe became more and more rare.

But the damage was done by that time. All the great civilizations had collapsed. The dragons had wiped out the dinosaurs and a majority of the people, too. Had Esca the Moor not destroyed Slate, in all likelihood, mankind would have been driven to extinction within a few short years.

As for the civilizations themselves, we know that cities existed. How vast or populous we do not know. We presume they were small, due to the inherent difficulties in building anything with the planet in such a tumultuous state, but we believe the cities were built in pockets of land, tracts which were comparatively scourge free. We have an account of a great tower built of ivory which was the last standing proof of the ingenuity of early man.

The Rift

The Clan

As wasps occupy the seat of ultimate power in dragon hierarchy, the clan is an organization comprised solely of moths with exceptional magical powers. It is the only organized group among dragons, and it maintains its influence by performing tasks for the dragon king.

The clan's leader is normally whichever of the moths that is most powerful. It is a position of very high influence and once a dragon achieves it (usually through assassination or other nefarious methods) they will not relinquish it sometimes for hundreds of years, depending on how powerful they are (and how well-guarded).

There are three basic types of dragon. There are three qualifiers which are associated to the three dragon types. These qualifiers refer solely to the the dragons' natures, and not to their physical attributes or appearance. The three qualifiers are:

Dragons are not natural creatures. They do not breathe. They possess many abilities which are biologically impossible and defy the laws of physics. For instance: they can fly. They can communicate telepathically with one another as well as with humans. Occasionally dragons will crossbreed, as was done in the case of the Earth-bound dragon named Blair. Blair is a dragon of extremely rare qualities: she is blue--a wasp characteristic, but she is also warm-blooded--a moth characteristic. She is smallish in size, similar to the moths, and shares many moth attributes, such as enhanced psionics.

Grubs

Grubs are the foodbreed dragons. They are bred on Slate strictly as food for dragons, as there is no other food source on Slate. In appearance, they are similar to large manatees, with skin ranging from gray to white. They have little intelligence, although they are capable of conscious thought and rudamentary speech.

Grubs are bred in hive-like chambers beneath the surface of Slate and are cared for by the nursemaid class of dragon heirarchy--female moth dragons whose psionic powers never developed enough for them to be allowed entrance into the exclusive order known among dragons as the Clan.

They are non-ambulatory.
They do not have wings.
They are warm-blooded.
Grubs’ only nourishment comes from a bile-like substance known as dragon’s milk, which is nursed between them.
- Dragon's milk is often harvested by the ruling class dragons to be fermented into alcohol.
- The concoction is not exactly poisonous to humans, but the few humans who have tasted it report that it is immensely intoxicating and even hallucinogenic.

Moths

Moth dragons are less volatile than wasp dragons.

Their skin is often smooth, snake-like, and in color they are generally either white or black, sometimes silver or gray and occasionally (though rarely) brown.
Moths often have whiskers rather than tusks or horns. When horns or tusks do appear they are much less striking, much smaller, than those of wasps.
They are warm-blooded.
They are more serpentine in appearance than reptilian, with shorter appendages but a longer tail which is distinctly snake-like, often coiled or writhing.
In size, moth dragons are generally half the size of the dominating wasps.

Wasp dragons are the most physically dominating of the three and have a number of physical characteristics which separate them from other dragons:

They range in color from green to red, orange, yellow and blue.
They are cold-blooded.
In appearance, they are distinctly reptilian, with thick, almost-metallic scales, and usually are adorned with numerous tusks and/or horns and occasionally a bony frill.
They are much larger in size than other types of dragons. The largest dragons weigh over one hundred tons.
Wasps have telepathic powers, but in this area the moths are vastly superior, which has ensured status and power to the moths, who would otherwise have been little more than push arounds.

Aurora Borealis

The Northern Lights have the potential to either enhance, or disrupt, the energies of the Wash. Occasionally the Aurora will attract the Wash energies, which will weaken the Wash, and can cause some confusion in the otherwise regular Wash patterns, and among the people who live there.
