Physical Location
The Cave of Dreams lies in the nexus between
Earth and
Slate. It is believed to be the actual physical location of
Slate, the black moon, though in a separate reality from
Earth. The cave did not physically exist until
the Clan opened
the rift which now connects
Earth and
Slate, allowing the mystical energies of
Slate to flow through and across
Earth, forming the phenomenon known as
the Wash. The cave does not exist except inside
the Wash.
One end of the cave opens in the norther arctic wild near Ellesmere Island in Canada. The opening is marked with a set of large boulders stacked in the shape of the pi symbol. Once inside that opening the cave opens up, revealing its megalithic size.
From there, the cave plunges deep into the
Earth, beneath Greenland and the Barents Sea. In
Earth Air the distance it traverses is nearly two-thousand miles, but in the shortened spaces of
the Wash, the distance is nearer to five hundred miles, although it still takes ten to twenty days of hiking through sub-zero degree temperatures and near utter darkness (the cave is mysteriously illuminated, very slightly, by an ethereal blueish glow) over sometimes very rugged terrain. The opposite end can be found in the wilds of Finland, at the bottom of a gorge formed between two towering walls of rock. Like the North American end, the opening is small and nondescript, appearing as a darkened recess about six feet high by four feet wide.
Phenomenon
The Cave of Dreams is the permanent residence of
Blair, one of the first
dragons to pass through the portal between
Earth and
Slate.
Blair is a powerful psychic, and the strength of her psionics bleeds out into the Cave of Dreams, causing the phenomena for which the cave was named. As a person walks through the cave, visible images flash before their eyes, in vivid holographic detail. Sometimes the images are memories are their own, and sometimes they belong to other people elsewhere in the world. The effect can become maddening. Voices often accompany the images, and sounds, and at times the traveler can find themselves in a wholly different place, but the effect is purely hallucionogenic.
The dreams only intensify during sleep, and become as real and as vivid as a dream can possibly be.
Blair has been known to communicate with people using the dreams, to convey messages and histories she feels they might be there to inquire about, and for this reason the cave, in the past, has been a destination for a small group of people who know of it, so that they might discover truths they might not have known otherwise.
Blair rarely exposes herself to people, choosing to remain hidden and to communicate through dreams.
Several tribes of indiginous people of the north have traditionally utilized a journey to the cave as a rite of passage for male youths. The youth usually must enter the cave for a predetermined period of time, and he is believed to be wiser when he emerges, and ready to be a man.
