Throughout the multi-milennial existence of
the Wash, people have naturally found their way within its borders. Often, the unwary traveler will get lost and not know how they came to be there and won't be able to figure out how to get back out. Sometimes they'll simply settle where they are, build a structure to call home, and remain. Many people remain even after they are enlightened to some of
the Wash's secrets, because people age very slowly in
the Wash, and life is simpler by far than in
Earth Air.
Sometimes enough people come together to begin a community, in the way that communities have been founded throughout the history of mankind, and, of course, sometimes those communities become cities. More often than not, a city in
the Wash will share the same physical location as its 'mirror city' in
Earth Air, the reason for this being simple enough: there are more people to get lost in cities, and when they get lost, they usually do not wander very far. It is not unusual for people to believe they are dreaming when they enter
the Wash, especially when they pass through a Wash portal in a city, only to find themselves suddenly staring out at an expansive prairie, or a forest, where only seconds ago there was the hustle and bustle of the city. If they don't retrace their steps exactly, however, they will soon realize they are not dreaming, and that they are in a land as strange and foreign as it can be. There are far fewer cities in
the Wash, and likewise there are far fewer citizens. The total population of permanent residents within
the Wash is speculated to be about two million.
The largest city within
the Wash is the mirror city of
Cape Town, South Africa. It is called, simply,
Cape, and has a population of around two hundred thousand people.
