A mysterious series of events unfold in various locations throughout the world, noted only by a clandestine society and a bona fide regular Joe, a beach lifeguard named Joe Copeland, who is puzzled by the sounds of wolves howling in the south-Florida night which only he hears.
A man emerges as if born from the muddy waters of a south-Florida swamp. Another man is killed by a mysterious stranger in Prague, and a summons is magically dispatched from the far, Arctic north. These events, which some have been anticipating for more than a millennia, could mark the rise of a horde of beasts bent on destroying mankind. What ensues is a race with two fronts: one to educate young Joe and arm him with the skills and knowledge he will need to kill a man named Gregg, and another to restore Gregg’s memory, so he can return the banished black moon, Slate, to Earth orbit, and gather his army for the onslaught. Joe is hounded by a pair of meth-heads-turned-werewolves along a magical trail called “the Wash” that cuts through the heart of reality without touching it, is given lessons and a gift of blood by a dragon, and is initiated into an ancient secret society, constantly haunted by the memory of lost love and the hope of rekindling the flame once his journey ends. Joe finds himself a somewhat unwilling and skeptical messiah, intimidated by the prospect of being the sole savior of all humanity. But in his journey he connects with pieces of himself that he never knew existed and finds the will to try to succeed.

Is it possible that a second moon once existed, orbiting Earth? How would that impact what we now know of the history of the world?
